Stop construction of the Polavarun Dam in Andhra Pradesh, India

The construction of this dam, as proposed, floods tribal areas that will displace large numbers of people from their traditional homes. It is argued that the dam is not necessary, but even if that is not correct, the government is not considering alternative designs that minimise the flooding of tribal lands. Rather than constructing one big dam, it is possible - and plans have been presented to the authorities - to construct smaller stepped dams that create the same level of water benefit without the largescale flooding.

The social impact of removing people from their traditional homes is devastating and can disrupt well established, successful groups for generations. It is not enough to just build this dam for agricultural and economic grounds when their are large numbers of people being affected who are simply ignored. It is time for us to stop advancing development with little or scant regard for the impact on people. It is time to concentrate our knowledge and expertise toward the benefit of people as a vital and integral element of any commercial project.

To make matters worse, this project is shrouded in shady deals and questionable tenders that gives off the stench of corruption and commercial self-interest. The project needs to be stopped and these problems of immoral actions both economic and social are transparently resolved.
