Let's Prevent Suicide On Our Campus

Recently, our campus experienced a loss of a student by suicide. We have had almost at least one death per year since I've been at Eastern most have which been some type of suicide. I think that our campus is not doing enough to prevent suicide and spread suicide awareness. Our counseling services are not that great on campus and there's not a lot of trained professionals here either that are accessible. I am asking you to sign this petition in support with the idea I came up with that could possibly help prevention efforts on campus. My idea was that students should have the opportunity to get suicide prevention training/QPR training on campus. Student workers are required to get this training but I do believe that all students can benefit from having the training so they can be aware of the signs for a suicide and be able to help out their friends by referring them to the right professionals. As a freshman we are required to take a health class I believe that this would be the best way to get every student to get this training because during this class they talk about health problems including mental health and I believe that this is important to be addressed and to give students the space to get the training without having them have to try to schedule in the training in their busy schedules. I will be writing a letter and talking with higher ups on campus about this idea! This petition will go along side of the letter to show the support.
