Responsible Regeneration: Save Chrisp Street Market & Protect Residents

*Responsible Regeneration: Save Chrisp Street Market & Protect Residents*

Following sudden concerns about the historical Chrisp Street Market, which was designed by Frederick Gibberd, and built as part of the Festival of Britain in 1951, most of us who have lived in the area for decades have concerns about the recent developments. We note that the regeneration scheme has been in the pipeline for many years in Lansbury ward, represented by Cllr Ohid Ahmed and others, but there appear to be a few sudden concerns about the scheme. It is understood that the Council's Strategic Development Committee will consider the application on 15 February, so any concerns must be made with facts now.

Lansbury ward Councillor, Cllr Ohid Ahmed, residents, shopkeepers and market stallholders call upon Poplar Harca and Tower Council to ensure that:

1. Poplar Harca and the Council must work together to ensure that residents, shops and market stallholders are fully protected, stood up for and do not lose out at all in any shape or form if/when the regeneration and affordable housing is delivered by Poplar Harca. It must be noted that the current state of affair is terrible for some as they live in almost inhumane conditions and must not be disadvantaged.

2. Market stallholders and shopkeepers must have a clear scope, return right and protection as intended. No Market stallholder, shopkeeper or resident be adversely affected and must be fully supported.

3. Residents must be protected, supported and cared for in the process.

4. We understand that that above is the intention of Poplar Harca too. However, it is important that it is explicitly clear, understood by all and any remaining concerns taken on board by Poplar Harca and the Council.

5. In addition, there must be parking spaces in the new regeneration scheme in order to secure sustainability and viability for the residents, local market traders, shops and the area.
