Reinstate UK aid for tackling malnutrition

The UK has slashed aid for tackling global malnutrition by 70% this year.

We are calling on the UK government to urgently reverse these unjust cuts and recommit to tackling malnutrition at the Nutrition for Growth summit this December.

Ask your MP to write to the Foreign Secretary to raise concern and urge her to:

  • Reinstate funding for nutrition programmes
  • Renew the committment to help 50 million people access nutrition services over the next five years

Take action today to send a message to your MP!

Dear MP,

I am writing to you to ask that you urgently raise the issue of global malnutrition with the Foreign Secretary.

I am deeply alarmed to hear that just when child malnutrition is soaring due to the covid-19 pandemic, UK aid for nutrition has been cut by 70%. This is disproportionate to the 30% reduction in the Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget.

Good nutrition is a basic human need. But shockingly, undernutrition drives nearly half of all deaths of children under 5 globally. 149 million children are also too short (stunted) due to poor nutrition in their early years, causing irreversible physical and brain damage, reducing life chances and weakening long-term health.

Historically, the UK has been a leader in tackling malnutrition, hosting the first ever Nutrition for Growth summit in 2013. It even surpassed its commitment to help reach 50 million people with nutrition services between 2015 and 2020.

But now, this work is being undone, with UK aid for nutrition being reduced from £121 million in 2018 to just £37 million in 2021. This has resulted in the closure of programmes that provide essential nutrition services to children and families that desperately need them.

We cannot walk away from malnourished children.

Please, urgently write to the Foreign Secretary to raise concern and ask her to recommit to tackling malnutrition at the Nutrition for Growth summit in December by:

- reinstating funding for nutrition programmes

- renewing the commitment to help 50 million people access nutrition services over the next 5 years
