Support the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act

Pregnant women have a lot on their minds. One thing they shouldn’t have to worry about? Whether they'll be fired from their jobs.

But when some women ask for adjustments so they can continue safely working - like avoiding heavy lifting, staying off ladders, or even drinking water - their bosses deny their requests. As a result, some women who want or need to continue working throughout their pregnancies have been fired, forced to quit, or forced onto unpaid leave.

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act will fix this problem by requiring employers to make the same types of accommodations for pregnancy that they already make for other similar conditions.

Tell your lawmakers to support the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.
Dear [Member of Congress],

I urge you to support pregnant workers by becoming a co-sponsor of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. This bill would require employers to make the same sorts of reasonable accommodations for pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions that they do for other similar conditions, ensuring that pregnant women can continue to do their jobs and support their families.

This commonsense piece of legislation would close the loophole that courts have opened up in the Pregnancy Discrimination Act and make unmistakably clear to employers that they are required to accommodate pregnant employees if they can do so without undue hardship. Pregnant women have been fired because they asked to avoid heavy lifting, or to stay off ladders, or to sit on a stool instead of standing at a cash register all day. Women should not have to choose between a healthy pregnancy and a job.
