Chimpanzees are humankind's closest genetic relative, sharing 96% of our DNA. An estimated 1,300 chimpanzees are currently held in U.S. laboratories, of which some 650 are federally owned.

The time has come for the United States to join the moral and humane community of countries like Great Britain, Austria, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and the Balearic Islands have either banned or severely limited the use of chimpanzees and other great apes in research.

We, the undersigned, support the passage of U.S. government legislation to end to the use of chimpanzees, and all great apes, in U.S. research or U.S. funded chimpanzee research anywhere in the world. We strongly support the immediate release of chimpanzees into permanent sanctuary.
