Organic baby formula containing additives processed with petrochemical solvents is suspected of making infants sick.
The source of the contamination is multibillion dollar Martek's chemically-processed oils, used for DHA and ARA supplements found in baby formulas, foods and milk.
Though USDA agreed years ago these additives should not be in organic foods, little changed due to industry interference.
A scandal surrounds a National Organics Program director overruling staff safety concerns after meeting with a lobbyist, who Cornucopia Institute says later misled a USDA panel reviewing the issue. This means that organic baby products still contain petrochemicals, says Cornucopia.
The Institute responded by filing ethics charges last week.
Cornucopia says "USDA seems to think" this controversy is "just going to go away."

We, the undersigned, supporters of Cornucopia's request for an investigation into the corruption that has allowed contamination of organic baby foods with petrochemicals, expect the USDA to carry out its promises to uphold the integrity of organic foods.
Furthermore we reject FDA's dismissal of parent and heathcare provider complaints of infants experiencing serious gastrointestinal symptoms from consuming Martek's tainted oils. We would be surprised if far worse health effects did not begin surfacing due to their consumption.
We are appalled, but not surprised, of reports that USDA has allowed corporate lobbyists to influence regulation of organic baby foods. As Cornucopia Institute asserts: "Since the government began regulating the organic label, corporate agribusinesses and their lobbyists have been doing everything in their power to co-opt the values the organic movement was founded upon while taking a larger slice of the profit pie."
Please understand, the the public has had enough of this corruption, and we are losing faith in our agencies to do the job taxpayers are paying them to do. If you can't ensure that baby foods and milk labeled as organic are not contaminated with GMOs and petrochemicals, then how can we trust you with anything else?
There is simply no excuse for USDA's National Organics Standard Board to allow this kind of contamination of any product labeled organic, much less for those marketed for infant consumption.
We know that Martek and perhaps other producers of chemically-derived DHA and ARA will continue to fight to keep these additives in organic foods without assuring their safety.
We request that you do your job to protect the integrity and safety of organic infant foods and all organic foods. We ask that you get these tainted additives out of baby foods as quickly as possible and keep them out!
