African Americans, Muslim women/vitamin D deficiency

Various studies have shown that wearing burkas and veils and confining women to houses where they cannot get adequate exposure to sunlight is causing an epidemic and Vitamin D deficiency in Middle Eastern women of Muslim sects that require or enforce these customs, causing severe health problems for not only the women wearing these burkas and veils but also their children who can develop poorly in the womb of the mother because of Vitamin D deficiency and suffer various growth and development problems in early childhood because of vitamin D deficiency.

Recent studies also show vitamin D deficiency is also at epidemic proportions among African and Latino Americans.

African Americans, because of their darker skin pigmentation, are not able to easily absorb an adequate amounts of UV rays to produce vitamin D in their skin when they are living in northern climates. This is because the sun's rays in northern climates are too weak to effectively penetrate the protective layer of melanin in African American skin without longer exposure than what Caucasions need.

Studies have shown that African Americans and Latinos who live in northern nondesert areas of the U.S. and Europe have a vitamin D deficiency rate as high as 97% for African Americans and 90% for Latino Americans.

Native Americans and Latinos without Spanish ancestry are 100% lactose intolerant/milk allergic which means they are unable to absorb adequate or any vitamin D from milk which is the primary source of vitamin D is the American diet, the only other significant source comes from fish and sunlight.

Sunlight striking human skin produces vitamin D.....getting vitamin D from other sources besides sunshine is difficult without supplementation .

In some people malabsorbtion syndromes of the stomach do not allow them to absorb vitamin D from supplementation in food and milk the only way they can get it is from exposure to sunlight.

Various studies have shown that Muslim women who are required to wear burkas and veils in accordance with religious custom and live in northern countries such as Europe or the U.S. where sunlight is weak compared to desert and tropical areas of the world have an even higher risk or near 100% chance of developing severe vitamin D deficiency and even in their home countries they most likely suffer from vitamin D deficiency.

Evolution/natural selection has created the difference in skin pigmentation between northern Europeans and people from tropical and desert zones of the world.

Increased skin pigmentation is an advantage to people in tropical and desert zones of the world because the increased melanin which causes skin to be darker protects tropical and desert people from overexposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun and resulting possible damage caused by intense tropical and desert sunlight and the lighter skin pigmentation of northern Europeans has evolved to allow them to more easily absorb sunlight in northern zones where the sun is weak and cloud cover increased which allows them to easily produce adequate levels of vitamin D required for healthy functioning of many organ systems including the brain.

People with dark skin pigmentation require up to 6-30 times more sunlight exposure to produce adequate levels of vitamin D for normal body function than people of northern European descent or white people.

The problem occurs when people from tropical zones relocate or are relocated to northern countries they're darker skin pigmentation makes it more difficult for them to absorb enough ultraviolet rays from the sun to produce enough vitamin D for healthy functioning of various organ systems of the body.....which is now suspected of causing or is linked to various potentially severe health problems which have a higher incidence among African Americans and Latino Americans such as:

High blood pressure,
cancer,
peripheral artery disease,
autoimmune diseases such as diabetes,
periodontal disease (gum disease),
poor brain function/impairment of thinking and memory loss,
tuberculosis,
 multiple sclerosis,
chronic pain syndromes,
seasonal affective disorder (depression),
schizophrenia,
Parkinson's disease,
Rickets in children (deformity and poor growth of long bones of the legs etc.)
Osteomalacia, (thinning, weakness of bones)
Osteoporosis. (loss of bone density)

These diseases which were once thought to have a higher incidence in African Americans and Latinos because of poor diet but are now suspected of being caused to a great extent from a lack of vitamin D in body systems from inability to absorb UV rays properly from weak northern sun.

These various diseases and disorders can be disabling, cause much pain and suffering and even be fatal.

We the undersigned agree with the sentiments of this author and wish for the World Health Organization and related governmental health bodies of the world to better educate men, women and children in the U.S., Europe and Muslim nations of the world about the dangers of vitamin D deficiency to women who wear or are required to wear burkas and veils and their children.

Also to educate African Americans, Latinos and other racial groups of darker skin color who live in northern nations of their high risk levels of having vitamin D deficiency so they can make appropriate lifestyle changes.
