Do you see my teeth now or later?

Dental health in public Australian dental clinics is neglected. People are placed on to waiting lists - sometimes up to 2 years to await treatment.

For non emergencies.

Sometimes with problems that cause worse health, such as gum disease from increased bacteria because of partially erupted wisdom teeth. Issues that have needed treatment for over a decade, and people still have to wait.

More staff are needed to deal with the amount of people on the waiting list for dental treatment.

It can cost over $2000AUD for dental treatment with a private dental specialist for surgical extraction. If a general dentist were to attempt extraction of a tooth close to nerves, then it could cause permanent nerve damage. People on Government allowances cannot afford this! They need specialist treatment now!

The health of the mouth not only affects the mouth, but can include sinus issues. The sinus is connected in some places to the top of the gums. Combine a sinus problem related to the teeth and gums, with allergies that affect the sinus. This could create a very sick person. Breathing is affected by swollen sinuses. Combine that with the drooling from gum disease, and you now also have a throat problem from the open mouth trying to breathe normally.

Not only that but the facial muscles are also in pain or clenched tighter than a healthy level. And contribute to the stress upon the body, thus creating discomfort and tension which is unecessary for a person to go through when they are in a place such as Australia where there are sophisticated dental surgical options available.

Dear Minister for NSW Health

We have signed to show our concern for this issue.

I am concerned that people have dental issues that should be treated sooner than they are now, when reliant upon the public dental clinics for treatment. The wait is up to 2 years.

Some issues are gum disease from problems such as partially erupted wisdom teeth, the gum is open to infections and bacteria when in this state, and some people are not treated for this health threat straight away due to a lack of staff who are knowledgeable in treating this. And if there is a waiting list for anytime within 2 years for some people, then this is obviously an issue that needs to be addressed, as many people on the list may have put their clinic visit off until their problem is really bad.

Then they have to wait to see a specialist. If there was even one more specialist employed, this could reduce the list of needy people who truly cannot afford private dental treatment, or health insurance.

According to a quote I received from a private dental specialist, it would cost over $2000 AUD to have surgical extraction of 6 specialist case wisdom teeth. Not including the possible costs of anaesthesia and hospital costs. The most wisdom teeth you grow or have in your mouth is 6, so this is an example to show you how expensive it could be for that treatment that is needed for some people on the public dental clinic waiting list.

Some have had this problem for many years. For example they are supposed to have treatment at the age of 14, and are instead on the waiting list at the age of 30. How can a person on a Government allowance be expected to be able to pay for that treatment if they want to get it done sooner?

And people really need that treatment as soon as possible to try to regain dental health and ease sensitive and diseased gums. Gums that bleed without even being brushed. Pain in the gums from eating anything or drinking anything.

Please consider this as an issue that should be looked into more thoroughly to ensure the health of Australians.
