Stop BYU Homelessness
Every year thousands of BYU students are kicked out of their houses/apartments with nowhere to go. This is recognized as a problem; however, it's magnitude is not clear. The BYU housing office is seeking a solution and working with legal officials, but are unable to enforce uniform off-campus management policies. Thus, it has become our duty as BYU students to send a message to the renters and management of off-campus housing. If you have ever been affected by this housing crisis, know someone who has, or does not want to be affected by this in the future then sign this petition. Send a message to BYU's off-campus housing, and let them know the magnitude of this problem.
Every year students are asked to leave their apartments when their contracts are expired. As well students are allowed to move in when their new contract begins. The problem is that there is an unnecessarily prolonged gap between the expiration of one contract to the start of another. We realize that there are necessary cleaning procedures which must be done without renters present; however, this does force thousands of students to be homeless for, in some cases, up to two weeks. If this problem were given more consideration then a solution could be found. We ask that there be a universal move in/move out date for all of BYU approved housing, which will minimize the days that students are without residence. In order to make this work there will need to be an agreeable communication between all housing complexes and all students. The purpose of this petition is to demonstrate the magnitude of this problem and hopefully persuade you that the BYU students are willing to work with BYU's off-campus housing management companies towards a solution.
