Stop Trump's Petty Attacks on Los Angeles

Partisan politics shouldn't have a body count. Yet the Trump administration is threatening just that by denying lifesaving community policing grants requested by the City of Los Angeles.

The Department of Justice (DoJ) gave no reason for for its decision to award no grants to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), but local law enforcement fear the cuts were spurred by the city's ongoing opposition to President Trump's policies. The city's status as a sanctuary city for undocumented Americans has especially riled the administration.

But Trump's political reprisal will have real — and dangerous — consequences for Los Angeles residents, unless we all speak out now.

The LAPD had sought to expand a widely praised community-oriented policing program that had already reduced violent crime by as much as 50 percent into the Harvard Park neighborhood. This plan would would have allowed police to work within the neighborhoods they serve to build trust and solve problems with community members — reducing crime and saving lives.

We cannot allow Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Trump administration to threaten the safety of our communities for the sake of their political games.

That's why I'm calling on the DoJ's official watchdog, Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz, to immediately launch an investigation to determine whether the department inappropriately denied LAPD's funding requests for political reasons.

Denying lifesaving funding as punishment for political opposition is fundamentally un-American. Please add your name now.

Your signature today will help demonstrate the public support we'll need to convince the inspector general to launch an investigation and hold the administration accountable for any violations.
