Animal activists around the world agree that imprisoning pregnant pigs in steel crates (commonly called "sow stalls") for up to sixteen weeks is cruel. This abusive practice has already been outlawed in the United Kingdom and the European Union is set to severely curtail the practice next year.
However, Australian pig farmers are dragging their feet on freeing their pregnant pigs from cruel confinement. A voluntary initiative has resulted in compliance by only one-third of the farms implicated.
It's time for Australia's law makers to step up to the plate and ban sow stalls. Tell the Parliament of Australia to outlaw this abusive farming practice!
