We need to tell President Kennedy and Provost Hunter to not go through with this fiscally unsound plan.
The Academic Program Prioritization Working Group (APPWG) is in the process of deciding to cut the theatre major degree at UMaine. The plan is designed to keep only a theatre minor degree at our campus and the productions. So, theatre will be taught and practiced, but in a diminished degree, and we won't be able to fully train students who want to major in theatre. We believe that the termination of the theatre degree is ill-advised and, not only won't save money, but will damage the university by sending potential students away to other institutions.
Theatre has always been an important part of the heritage of UMaine, but it has also been an important part of a full education. Cutting the major degree will diminish the importance of the arts on campus and in the community, and stop our ability to train students for grad schools and jobs in the industry, education, and in the arts.
We the undersigned respectfully petition the committee to NOT recommend terminating the Theatre Major degree at UMaine. Terminating the degree does not save money immediately, and will drive away tuition paying students, causing lasting damage to the institution. The arts at the university provides significant service to the state and the local community. Terminating the major will diminish the cultural life that the arts provide to central and northern Maine. Thank you for listening to our opinion.
