End 1-hour parking restriction for Jewett St. residents

I'm writing because I am petitioning the Newton Traffic Council to reconsider the 1-hr parking limit on Jewett st. Renters or owners with no access to an off-street spot have no viable options within walking distance that allow them to avoid receiving tickets.

Why are residents of Newton Corner being punished for parking on their own streets? There are no nearby on- or off-street options available to us that are low-cost and/or within easy walking distance.

There seem to be plenty of residents of Jewett St who do not have access to an off-street parking spot. Theoretically the cost (in $15 tickets) to park on Jewett St. is $450 a month, and that is assuming there is only one ticket issued per day. Is this really truly a public street, if we aren't even allowed to use it? We are not the city's ATM!

The 1-hour parking regulation is completely ridiculous for a variety of reasons. There are no commercial businesses nearby which would fill our street with strange vehicles. Yes, there are commuter bus stops on Washington St: however there are very simple and easy ways to prevent drivers from outside of our neighborhood from taking advantage of this without also penalizing residents. For example, there are other streets nearby (Waban) that have resident-only rules. Newtonville is full of resident parking areas and resident exemptions to hourly limits. Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston all issue resident parking permits for areas similar to this. Why are we treated any differently?

Please consider signing this petition to request that the Newton Traffic Council either:

1) Remove the 1 hour parking restriction altogether

or

2) Add a "residential exception" to the hour limit, or a "resident-only" designation for residents of Jewett street or abutting properties, so that those without a choice may park on the street without being punished by the city.

Please sign and add your address so as to identify you as a Jewett St area resident. Your information and comments will be submitted to the Newton Traffic Council and any relevant City Council members, but otherwise kept completely private.

If you know of anyone else who is affected by this situation, please share this petition with them! The more signatures we have, the stronger our case.

Thank you!

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave your comments. Please be sure to spread the word to neighbors and others in your households.

We’ve received the attention of Maria Scibelli Greenberg, our Ward 1 Councilor. She has agreed that this request is reasonable, and has reached out to the Transportation Dept. to see what they can do to help. I will keep you posted!
