Noisy Motorcycles in BC, Canada. Why is there no testing?

  • by: Peter Mare
  • recipient: Attorney generals of British Columbia, Canada, MPs., superintendent of the RCMP, and mayors

According to the RCMP and the Attorney General (when I inquired about this issue in 2010), motorcycles' noise levels can only be evaluated at idle. Now, you know why Hells Angels motorcycle, law-abiding Harley Davidson, and other bikers can drive loud motorcycles. I was told 2 years ago that a law would be soon be drafted, but I have not heard anything, except a lot more loud motorcycles! You?

Why is it that the RCMP, the attorney general of BC, and the mayors are not doing anything about loud motorcycles, when motorcycles are being tested in at least one province I know of (Alberta) and when there is a test available to them? This is the test. The video is 4 years old. Don't you thnk it is time they act?

We want a law to be passed and a law that has teeth.

We know sleep is key to good health. Do you enjoy having your sleep disturbed by motorcycle drivers? Do you enjoy resting in your yeard, only to be reminded that Hells Angels are driving by?

BACKGROUND (see letter below)

About 4 years ago, I contacted the RCMP and then Ms. Shirley Bond, the attorney general. Ms. Bond has moved to another ministry.

Please, support this petition. It is your health, your sleep. You have the right to as a quiet neighbourhood as it is possible.

Dear Attorney General, Superintendent, and Mayors:

According to the RCMP and the Attorney General, the law stipulates that motorcycles' noise levels can only be evaluated at idle, which explains why motorcycle bikers can drive loud motorcycles, especially when they rev them up and accelerate. This law is highly ineffective. These loud bikers are waking me up in the middle of the night and are annoying me during the day. Since many of these bikers are also gang members, they also leave a not si subtle message that they can do as they wish. As it stands, bikers can easily prep their bikes to pass an idle test. This is unacceptable.

I want that a law be enacted and voted before the next election, that would give the RCMP the means to properly assess noise levels generated by motorcycles at all speeds and conditions and to ticket motorcycle bikers who generate excessive noise levels. Since many of the offenders today are gang members, removal of the motorbike after a second offense might be needed as well since payments of fees might prove to be ineffective. By excessive, I mean noise levels that can be heard by people in dwellings at all times in excess of noise levels generated by cars.

I want the law to change and I want a law that has teeth, so that all motorcycles will now be evaluated at various RPM using a test like this one (the SAE J2825 test, created by the society of automotive engineers), to properly test motorbike for excessive noise levels in decibels, at random, and effectively. Note that the video is 4 years old already!

If no law is passed before the election, you know who I will vote for. Not you!
