Republican extremists are refusing to raise the debt ceiling, and threatening default and economic catastrophe unless their demands are met.
And Democrats should tell them to go to hell.
The debt limit authorizes borrowing for debt already incurred. Refusing to raise it doesn't mean you're cutting spending, it means you're not paying the bills you already owe. And if we don't raise it, it will send the US into default, dramatically raise the interest rates the government needs to pay on debt, and almost certainly send the economy into a deep recession.
But Republican extremists in the House don't care, and they are willing to drive America off a cliff to appease their base.
If we give in to these extremists now, and give them things they could never get via a Congressional vote, we will be handing over control of the country forevermore, and letting these lunatics cause incalculable damage.
We don't need to deal with these extremists. There are 18 Republican House members in districts that Biden won, and they are vulnerable in 2024. We only need 5 of them to vote with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling to make it happen. This can be done, given enough pressure.
So tell Democrats: No deals with Republican extremists on the debt ceiling.
