Don't Mess Around With the Department of Education, Trump!

  • by: Kevin Mathews
  • recipient: U.S. Congress - Senator Mitch McConnell & Rep. Paul Ryan

Look, it's obvious that Donald Trump doesn't care about the Department of Education, or else he wouldn't have appointed the inexperienced and unknowledgeable Besty DeVos to lead it. Nevertheless, it's going too far for him to formally propose that the departments of Labor and Education merge into a single entity.

Education is so much more than a pipeway for a career. While there's obviously a need for vocational training, this move seems to step from a faulty philosophy that there's little point in intellectualism that goes beyond preparing people to be good employees.

As for the administration's claims that it will help the government to examine civil rights complaints at both schools and workplaces more easily, that'd be a lot easier to believe if DeVos weren't rapidly dismissing most of the complaints filed to her department.

Fortunately, this major structural change cannot go into effect without the approval of Congress. Since the public education system could use all the help it can get, we call on our legislators not de-emphasize education by consolidating the department. Mr. McConnell and Mr. Ryan, please reject this proposal.
