Million of people sit unemployed, in jail, or at home because they cannot drive or they cannot afford an automobile and all of it's associated costs such as insurance and gas.
We spend a fortune of our GDP on roads and cars and yet this system automatically puts anyone that looses access to drive an automobile at great risk and often leaves them in isolation.
The automobile has done much to ruin the health and happiness in the United States because of the unreasonable amount of time we must spend in them our health and wealth are often ruined even if we never suffer an accident.
If time for the United States to build a system of trams, trains, busses, and boats to remobilise America for every 'micro-urban' area of 25,000 people or more and put much of our idle population back to work in a sustainable transportation system that isn't reliant on a McDonald's employee laying out $17,000 every 5 years for a new car not to mention the other expenses and the employee's lack of employability as soon as they loose access to a automobile.
One should not be a shut-in because they are elderly and can't drive. One should not have to choose between breaking the law to drive a junk automobile without insurance to work a minimum wage job or what; try to remain at your parents or go on welfare because you can't afford college or an automobile?
At least an extensive nationwide system of trams would give people a chance for a humane start in their young lives with lower paying jobs and gives them the possibility of escaping a life of servitude paying off automobile and college loans in order to live a decent life if they so chose.
