Save Summer Links

For the past sixteen years, Summer Links has been a consistently successful program. Since Michelle Obama began the program to fund students in community service and social justice internships throughout Chicago, Summer Links has supported hundreds of students in deep engagement with Chicago, and has helped numerous community organizations achieve their summer goals.  However, the University of Chicago Community Service Center is in the process of a conceptual overhaul and has begun a retrenchment of its commitment to social justice and to community accountability. This is a disturbing trend within the University as a whole. Not only was the effective director of the program fired unceremoniously and without explanation, alumni of the program have been systematically cut out of meaningful decision making processes as Summer Links is drastically re-envisioned.  University of Chicago: do not abandon your progressive students.  Please work with us to keep Summer Links as a program that fosters critical thinking and meaningful civic engagement.

Stop excluding Summer Links alumni from helping to determine the future of this important summer internship program. Allow students in the college to serve as Program Coordinators as has always been the case; allow graduate students to participate in the program as has always been the case; restore Summer Links to its focus on social justice as has always been the case by placing it within the Social Justice arm of the UCSC.  Don’t fix what isn’t broken.
