Stop the ban on high heels!

A number of governments, companies, schools and other establishments have recently passed or are contemplating passing a ban on the wearing of high heel shoes. 

In most cases, these bans are centered around an improper moral judgment based on the theory that high heels make a woman sexy, and a sexy woman can provoke men, and provoked men leads to immoral behavior. How ridiculous is that?

This petition is directed at those government officials and others who have imposed such a ban or are contemplating such a ban, to inform them that:

1.      It is the unalienable right for one to wear whatever kind of shoe one wishes to wear;

2.      High heels are fashionable. Whether you like it or not, there are just some outfits that are synonymous with high-heeled shoes. To wear some outfits with flats or low-heeled footwear would be to commit a faux pas or a fashion blunder;

3.      That while high heels may make their wearers look sexier, there should not be a correlation drawn between wearing high heels and immoral behavior; yes, high heels accentuate the physical attributes of femininity: legs are elongated; the back is curved, causing an accentuation of the bust and derriere. But high heels can also empower their wearers. And isn%u2019t it the responsibility of men to %u201Ckeep it in their pants%u201D and act respectfully to all women, even if she is wearing a sexy outfit and sexy heels? Wearing heels is not an invitation to rape, molestation, or just plain inapprorpriate behavior.

We, the undersigned, therefore, wish that you reconsider your ban or your plan to ban high heels. Instead, focus on empowering women in general and supporting their rights - including the right to wear whatever they so choose. And focus on educating men to act like gentlemen. It's okay if they appreciate a woman wearing high heels, but that doesn't give them license to behave like a pig.
