Help stop the senseless slaughter of healthy sled dogs in BC

On April 10,2010 Outdoor Adventures, a company that hold sled dogs excursions, brutally slaughtered 52 sled dogs because of falling revenue due to the economy and lack of tourists. This caused an outrage to which the Minister of Agriculture, Don McRae responded by creating a "Sled Dog Code of Practice" which are guidelines on how to shoot the dogs "humanely". The new guidelines also left room for healthy dogs to  be shot. This could allow companies like Outdoor Adventures to buy sled dogs and slaughter them when they didn't need them anymore and repeat this year after year. There is NOTHING humane about killing dogs to protect profits.
My hopes by creating this petition will be that the BC Government will rethink this barbaric code and change the law to make sure these companies have a contingency plan to foster the dogs until the next season or find homes for them.
This new "Sled dog code of practice" is a barbaric and ill thought out slap in the face to animal rights. Although there are laws to protect animals from abuse, this new code contradicts those laws, shooting healthy dogs to protect profits is clearly animal abuse.
Companies like Outdoor Adventures have proven themselves to be animal abusers and need a sensible solution to this problem, not an "abuse guideline". A proper business plan to take into account the rights of these animals and how to deal with them if the business should suffer would make more sense.
I urge you to rethink this code with more thought to  the mistreatment of these animals instead of to the protection of businesses who abuse animals.  Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and petition.
