Help Save The Delaware River from Gas Drilling

**Updated 8/9/09 A new hearing has been set for September 23, 2009 in Hawley, Pennsylvania.  Every opinion counts...sign this petition today!

Chesapeake Appalachia has revised their application for the Cutrone Withdrawal Site. The new docket will be available to view at: www.state.nj.us/drbc/.

Your voice is needed to keep them from allowing Chesapeake Appalachia from being granted a permit to use over one million gallons of water per day for gas drilling.  The Delaware River supplies water to over 28 million people.  This granted permit would open the doors to others and hence the "flood" gates would open.  Please sign this petition, call the DRBC (609) 883-9500 to voice your opinion and email: pamela.bush@drbc.state.nj.us We can't lose our most valuable resource..water!

The Upper Delaware Watershed [which includes the entire New York City Watershed]. Chesapeake and their foriegn partners have begun deployment within the Watershed Region.
Overwhelming evidence and much science now exists that the type & scale of gas drilling proposed for this region - made possible by total federal deregulation - is a danger to the public health, causes contaminated drinking water, carcinogens in the farmland and food chain, torn-up roads, air pollution, plummeting home values, and noise polution.

***Chesapeake Appalachia is seeking permission from the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) to withdraw 1 million gallons a day from the West Branch of the Delaware River for hydraulic fracturing and natural gas extraction.  This is the first application to the DRBC for this purpose and would put the Delaware River Watershed at risk for tens of thousands of applications to follow.

The withdrawal is proposed in Buckingham Township, Wayne County, PA, across from Hancock, NY. More information about this meeting is on the DRBC website:  http://www.state.nj.us/drbc/commeet.htm.

Natural gas extraction would have a devastating impact on the Delaware River and the entire basin area.  Please speak out to protect this extraordinary resource and the community that we all hold so dear.  This is a critical moment in this struggle & your response is critical.

After months of discussion of the substantial impacts that natural gas drilling will have on the Delaware River Watershed, Chesapeake Appalachia will be the first with their "foot in the door" application to use 1 million gallons of water per day for hydraulic fracturing and natural gas development. The withdrawal is proposed for the West Branch of the Delaware River just above the East Branch in Buckingham Township, Wayne County, PA, across from Hancock, NY. The Draft permit is at: http://www.drbc.net

Dear Commissioners,

We the under signed are very concerned that water will be withdrawn from the West Branch of the Delaware River in Wayne County, PA for natural gas drilling. The flow of the West Branch is regulated by New York City for water supply and some releases are made to protect the West Branch and the main stem, which begins where the East Branch joins just south of the proposed withdrawal location.  It is difficult enough to keep a healthy flow in the river; there are already lots of competing interests regarding flow management. Fresh water is needed by people for water supply and fish, wildlife and aquatic life cannot exist without a healthy flow regime.

Until the Commission completes a build-out analysis of the full impacts of water withdrawals and pollution inputs for natural gas extraction, it is premature for the Commission to approve withdrawals.  How much water will be needed ultimately by all gas development projects in the Upper Delaware River Watershed? What will these water withdrawals do to the water supply and aquatic life that rely on these waters? How will the exceptional water quality of this part of the river be impacted by the withdrawal, compounded by the input of pollution from gas development projects? This proposed docket forecasts over a 10 year period%u2014how will this withdrawal impact the region, compounded with other projects%u2014over that time?

Executive Director Carol Collier has issued a Determination in May 2009 that natural gas extraction has the potential to have substantial impacts on the Special Protection Waters of the Delaware River, which includes the West Branch. But how will those impacts be measured so that harm can be averted? What is the %u201Csafe yield%u201D of the River? Will we sacrifice our water quality and volume for the development of natural gas? Until you have studied the ultimate build out of what is expected and how that will impact our precious resources, it is wrong to approve this application.

Please postpone action on this Application until you complete a build-out analysis of gas development.  Thank you for protecting the Delaware River! Our voice is representative of the world as this is and will become a pressing issue for many worldwide.
