UCLA Phi Kappa Psi has had three sexual assault incidents this year and has mishandled all three cases.
During Fall Quarter 2018, Phi Psi received a report that two women had been sexually assualted by one of their members. Only after immense pressure from the UCLA Panhellenic community, the Phi Psi executive board removed the member from their fraternity. However, they allowed the perpetrator to still live in their fraternity house.
UCLA Phi Psi assured the community and the victims that the perpetrator would not be present at any social events, as he was no longer a member of Phi Psi. However, Phi Psi failed to enforce this rule and allowed the perpetrator to attend a date party, therefore failing to follow through with their promise and failing to protect the victim and the entire Panhellenic community. After this subsequent incident, Phi Kappa Psi decided to put themselves on social probation for Winter Quarter and ensured the Greek community that they would educate their members on consent.
During Winter Quarter 2019, yet another woman of the Panhellenic community reported an incident of sexual assaut - rape - by a member of Phi Psi. Again, after much pressure from the Panhellenic community, the perpetrator was removed from the fraternity. However, he is still living in the fraternity house today. The Phi Psi executive board has once again assured the community that the perpetrator will not be present at any events, however, the fraternity has shown it is incapable of ensuring this. In the meantime, Phi Psi has decided to remove itself from social probation and has continued hosting parties and other social events for Spring Quarter, showing extreme negligence for its members' actions.
We are asking you to please show your support for the victims and demand that Phi Psi be held accountable. We are urging that Phi Psi change their policy on sexual assault allegations and to take sexual assault cases seriously. We are urging Phi Kappa Psi to not allow perpetrators to live in their fraternity house and to change their housing agreement. We are urging Phi Psi to put themselves on social probation and take accountability for what their members have done. We are urging Phi Psi to take responsibility for their actions and to show respect to the victims that have now had their lives forever changed.
