Support Labeling for Toxic Salmon!

NEW STUDY REVEALS TOXIC DANGERS FROM FARMED SALMON! A recent study concluded that farmed salmon contain 10 times the level of dangerous chemicals found in wild Pacific salmon. The contaminants include PCBs, dioxins and two banned pesticides-- PCBs and dioxins are potent toxins that can cause cancer and damage neurological systems in humans. Based on the study of over 700 fish from all the major farmed salmon producers, researchers concluded that even the cleanest of the farmed salmon shouldn't be eaten more than once or twice a month according to fish safety guidelines developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Unfortunately, the FDA is ignoring this evidence and basing their reccommendations on a PCB tolerance level established 20 years ago -- 40 times looser than the Environmental Protection Agency's fish safety guideline: "Our advice to consumers is not to alter consumption of farmed or wild salmon or other fish,'' said FDA representative Terry Troxell (SF Chronicle Jan 9, 2004)

As consumers, we rely upon the FDA to label products for safety. We are concerned that many people will unwittingly put themselves at risk by unknowingly buying farmed salmon in stores. For this reason, we feel that the FDA should mandate that farmed salmon always be clearly labeled as “farmed” and the country of origin of all farmed salmon should be clearly identified.
Urge the FDA to take action, help keep consumers safe from toxic salmon!

Dear Commissioner McClellan,

We are writing to you, to urge you to take immediate action in response to recent findings which have shown dangerous cancer-causing toxin levels in farmed salmon which is sold widely in the United States. A recent study sampled approximately 700 farmed and wild salmon from around the world from wholesales and retailers in 16 major cities in North America and Europe. This report produced maximum consumption levels based on Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. The study revealed:

· PCB, dioxins and two specific pesticides are more concentrated in the farmed salmon as a group, than in the wild salmon

· Farmed salmon from Frankfurt, Edinburgh, Paris, London, Oslo, Boston, San Francisco, and Toronto received maximum consumption recommendations of one-half to one meal per month

· Farmed salmon from LA, Washington DC, Seattle, Chicago, New York, and Vancouver received maximum consumption recommendations of three meals per month

As consumers, we rely upon the FDA to label products for safety. We are concerned that many people will unwittingly put themselves at risk by unknowingly buying farmed salmon in the stores. For this reason, we feel that the FDA should mandate that farmed salmon always be clearly labeled as “farmed” and the country of origin of all farmed salmon should be clearly identified.
