The Immediate reinstatement of the South County High School Director of Student Activities, Leah Conte, Assistant Director of Student Activities, Blair Smith, and Assistant Director of Student Activities, Mark Luther
We, the residents of South County and elsewhere, are calling for the immediate reinstatement of the South County High School Director of Student Activities, Leah Conte, Assistant Director of Student Activities, Blair Smith, and Assistant Director of Student Activities, Mark Luther.
All three employees of the Fairfax County Public School system have been an integral part of the South County community of Fairfax for over 10 years. Through their hard work and dedicated leadership South County High School gained swift prominence as an outstanding public high school. Their impact can be attributed to student achievements in academics, the fine arts and the development of strong athletic programs which have competed in various state championships throughout the years. This was all made possible due to the dedication and tireless work of these individuals.
Additionally, through their efforts and support the school community as well as the larger area community benefited from their management and coordination of the following activities: the annual Holiday Extravaganza and Craft Show, Cookies with Santa, the annual South County High School Golf Tournament, neighborhood Homecoming Parades, and the Twilight Rock-n-Run 5K, etc. Furthermore these individuals raised over $500,000 resulting from various fundraisers towards the installation of synthetic turf fields which are benefited by the entire area community.
It continues to be our belief their removal was done without just cause and was done in a manner that resulted in harm to students and the community. The Fairfax County School Board has refused to afford sufficient explanation about these dismissals and we lack assurance any protocols have been put into place to avoid similar nontransparent dismissals in the future. We believe the Fairfax County Public School system, to include high level Superintendent administration, has handled this situation poorly and without significant reason and thoughtfulness. Their actions have resulted in crippling a school community and such actions are a detriment to the students, parents and residents of the South County Community. These "punitive actions" on the part of the system hurt the very people they are to support, the students.
Therefore, based upon the foregoing, we are calling for the immediate reinstatement of the South County High School Director of Student Activities, Leah Conte, Assistant Director of Student Activities, Blair Smith, and Assistant Director of Student Activities, Mark Luther.
