A Mass Shooting at an LGBTQ Nightclub Left 5 Dead and Dozens Injured. Demand It Be Investigated as a Hate Crime.

On the night before Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day that "pays homage to transgender people who were killed by anti-transgender violence," a gunman murdered 5 people and injured 25 more in a LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs.

Sign the petition and demand that the FBI investigate this for what it was – a hate crime.

The gunman opened fire for less than two minutes before a brave patron tackled and stopped him from taking more lives.

This is just the latest of over 600 mass shootings that the United States has seen this year, and comes amidst a tidal wave of hateful anti-LGBTQ legislation and the sentiment it fuels. The violent resentment of a community so defined by love and acceptance is utterly gut-wrenching. As a local mother in Colorado Springs put it, "[L]ove will never hurt you. The gays are not coming for you. There is no agenda. It doesn't hurt you to let people be themselves."

This shooting is particularly devastating because of the opportunities law enforcement and prosecutors had to stop it from ever happening. Last year, the gunman was arrested after violently threatening his mother with a bomb and other weapons. Despite this, no charges were brought and Colorado's red flag law was never triggered.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office vowed to never file a petition to remove someone's weapons if they seem to be a threat to themselves or others. According to public records, it seems the department made good on their horrifying promise. And now 5 people are dead, dozens more are injured, and an entire community is reeling.

Now that the investigation is in the hands of the FBI, we cannot allow for another oversight that will allow this violent, hateful gunman to be held any less accountable than he deserves. We owe it to every victim of gun violence; to every member of the LGBTQ community and their loved ones; to the entirety of the United States, which is rocked daily by mass shootings.
