A Safer Syria Starts Now

One year after the fall of the Assad regime, millions of Syrians are returning to communities devastated by conflict only to find their homes, schools, and farmland contaminated with deadly landmines and unexploded ordnance.

The danger is staggering. More than 1,500 Syrians have already suffered injury or death from explosives in the past year – a third of them children. More lives will be lost if we don't remove these explosives quickly.

But, there is hope. The HALO Trust is eliminating landmines and unexploded bombs to provide safety and help Syria recover. In Maar Debseh village, HALO recently cleared rockets, shells, and other explosives from the only operational school in the community so that today, over 1,000 students can safely receive their education.

HALO does not currently receive funding from the U.S. Government in Syria, but your voice can help. Send a letter to your Members of Congress today to support demining efforts that save lives, protect children, and give Syrians the chance to rebuild safely.
Subject: Support Humanitarian Demining in Syria

Dear Senator/Representative,

As your constituent, I urge you to support increased funding for State Department humanitarian demining programs at this pivotal moment in Syria. One year after the fall of the Assad regime, millions of Syrians are returning to communities devastated by conflict only to find their homes, schools, and farms contaminated with landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO).

Fourteen years of fighting have left every region of Syria littered with explosive hazards. Since December 2024, there have been over 1,500 casualties from explosive ordnance; over a third have been children.

State Department Conventional Weapons Destruction (CWD) programs address the humanitarian impacts of landmines, IEDs, and other explosive remnants of war, and advance viral U.S. interests in Syria and beyond.

CWD programs make America safer by removing explosive hazards that threaten U.S. troops, Embassy staff, and other Americans in conflict areas, while providing safety for local civilians. Demining will help stabilize Syria during a fragile political transition, reduce the risk that extremist groups exploit insecurity, and support regional stability. Demining is also critical for long-term economic recovery in Syria.

Given the importance of CWD programs in saving lives and advancing U.S. foreign policy interests, I urge you to support funding at the level of $290 million for CWD activities in the FY26 State Department budget and ensure that increased U.S. funding is provided to support demining in Syria.

Thank you for your leadership on this important issue.

Sincerely,
