ESU needs to
mandate free software use for documents and presentations in the classroom.
"Free software is the foundation of a learning society--where the tools we all use are free to share, study and modify." The Free Software Foundation
http://www.fsf.org/We the undersigned, request the creation of a new policy that requires all students and faculty to create class documents and presentations in free, open source software.
The Free Software Foundation says "Free software is the foundation of a learning society--where the tools we all use are free to share, study and modify."
As a progressive learning institution we hope that in the near future Emporia will shed proprietary office-type software, mandating the use of software that is free to all, like OpenOffice.
Richard Stallman, the father of GNU, in
Why Schools Should Use Open Source Software, says:
"School should teach students ways of life that will benefit society as a whole. They should promote the use of free software just as they promote recycling. If schools teach students free software, then the students will use free software after they graduate. This will help society as a whole escape from being dominated (and gouged) by mega corporations."
