Veterans survivor benefits must be changed.

In a seemingly absurd quirk of federal laws on death benefits, up to 54,000 military widows and widowers around the nation are losing up to $13,000 a year in death benefits unless they take another walk down the aisle after age 57.

The dispute involves monthly payments from two government programs that pay benefits to the surviving spouses or children of veterans: the Survivor Benefit Plan and the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation program.

We the undersigned strongly urge you to reconsider the policy on death benefit payments for veteran spouses over the age of 57. Recently an appeals court upheld this law and stated that they believed congress was trying to encourage widows to remarry. The Survivor Benefit Plan was purchased by these veterans for there respective families and this law takes away from the benefits these veterans earned for there families. Those of you in Congress have stated that there is a funding issue preventing this appeal from succeeding. Surely giving these families what they deserve is worth the extra money spent to enact this change. Thank you for your time.
