DELAY THE MARCH 15 VOTE on the SPPS Strategic Plan.

Welcome! This petition has been drafted by parents of children in the St Paul, Minnesota Public School district to collectively convey our concerns about the "Strong Schools, Strong Communities" plan for the district.
The strategic plan has been developed with little input from the community that it seeks to strengthen. We are being presented with a plan that has already been decided and, in some cases, begun to be implemented. In spite of many questions, concerns, and valuable expertise that parents have, the Saint Paul School Board is set to vote on the plan on March 15, 2011. Just some of the concerns voiced so far include:
- Moving almost all 6th grade classes from elementary to middle schools
- The introduction of a standard curriculum that leaves little room for flexibility in teaching methods and requires frequent testing of students
- The removal/change in status of magnet schools (even those that are currently have a high success rate with all their students)
This vote should be postponed in order to:
(a) Allow parents more time to develop a full understanding of what the plan really means for our children, our schools, and the district.
(b) Allow the district to develop a consultation process with parents on how the goals of the district and the goals of parents can be dovetailed to create a genuinely sustainable strategic plan.

Dear Saint Paul Public School Board Members,

We the undersigned urge you to delay the upcoming vote on March 15, 2011 on the "Strong Schools, Strong Communities" plan. We ask for this delay in order that:

(a) Parents have more time develop a full understanding of what the plan really means for our children, our schools, and the district.

(b) The district can develop a consultation process with parents on how the goals of the district and the goals of the parent community can be dovetailed to create a genuinely sustainable strategic plan.
