Save the cherry garden in Wigan from retail developers

We the undersigned strongly object to Wigan Council surrendering their interest in a leasehold for the land adjacent to the Cherry Gardens Hotel Wigan.

We also wish this land to be kept as a Community Garden for the enjoyment of the people of Wigan, as it was always the intention of the landowners when it assigned this leasehold to Wigan Corporation in 1953 for 999 years.

This land is under threat from developers. The pub is no longer owned by the brewery, but by an offshore multi billion pound company registered in Jersey. The development company has a huge portfolio of retail outlets, supermarkets, pubs and shopping malls all over the UK.
The land is currently under the safe keeping of Wigan Council through a lease signed in 1953 for 999 years.
There is a covenant on the land which states that it is to be used as an ornamental garden for the enjoyment of the people of Wigan, and that it cannot be built upon.
The land is in a conservation area and is a green, open space with protection orders on the trees.
Wigan Council is now proposing to dispose of the land to the development company, and they plan to turn this garden into retail outlets/supermarket.
The entrance and exit will be situated on a very busy, and at times dangerous roundabout, causing even more traffic congestion and delays.
Many children and parents will be forced to cross this entrance/exit on their way to and from local schools.
We want to work with the cash strapped council, to find a solution, to reclaim the garden for the enjoyment of the people of Wigan.
We aim to do this by using the Council's scheme, The Deal, so it can become a community garden once again.
If it is disposed of to the development company, it will be lost forever, and it will become private land, forbidden to the public.

Let us show the members of the council the true level of objection to their proposal to dispose of the land.
