Keep Ethnic Sashes for Graduation!

Greetings Fresno Pacific Community,

Many of you may or may not have heard about the latest institutional decision Fresno Pacific made in discontinuing a long lasting tradition at our graduation ceremony -- allowing students to proudly wear their ethnic sashes at graduation.

To many, this may come as a surprise, since Fresno Pacific has always taken pride in acknowledging as well as valuing all the diverse cultures found on campus. To others, this may be the solution to their cry out for recognition as part of other groups not belonging to "minority groups."

To those who want recognition for being part of other groups as well, we hear you and the fight to get recognition for those other groups you may be a part of can be started as well, but why must the discontinuance of ethnic sashes have to be the price to pay in exchange for equality in recognition?

Those coming from minority groups, or labeling themselves as anything else aside from "White" should get to proudly represent their roots when they receive their college degree. We overcome so many obstacles, both financial and cultural, to get to that stage on graduation day, and with our presence and sash make the statement that we are, one by one, making a difference in our communities and cultures.

We are reaching new levels through our educational achievements, so let's advocate for our right to wear our ethnic sashes. It's time to sign our voices to be heard. Join us with your signature.
