End Racism and Bullying in Fort Osage Schools — Protect Our Students Now

Created by: Sarah Lawson

Addressed to: Fort Osage School District Superintendent, Board of Education, and Administration

The Problem

Racism and bullying are not isolated incidents — they're an ongoing crisis that's damaging our students, our schools, and our community. In Fort Osage School District, reports of racial slurs, bullying, and discrimination have surfaced repeatedly. Yet accountability and consistent action remain lacking.

Across America, over 20% of students report being bullied each year, and 1 in 5 students of color experience racial discrimination at school. The effects are devastating — victims of bullying are more than twice as likely to experience depression, substance abuse, or suicidal thoughts. According to national data from the CDC and the U.S. Department of Education, suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10–18, with bullying and racism cited as significant contributing factors.

No child should fear walking into school because of the color of their skin, the words of their peers, or the inaction of those in power.

The Vision

We are calling for Fort Osage School District to adopt a zero-tolerance anti-racism and anti-bullying policy with real consequences for discriminatory behavior. Our campaign's vision includes:
1. Harsher penalties for racial slurs, hate speech, and targeted bullying.
2. Mandatory anti-racism and empathy training for all students, teachers, and staff.
3. Establishing an Inclusion & Equity Committee made up of students, parents, teachers, and administrators to review incidents and promote accountability.
4. Providing mental-health and peer-support resources for victims of bullying and discrimination.
5. Public transparency — annual reporting of bullying and racism data within the district.

Why It Matters

When children are silenced, shamed, or ignored, the harm follows them into adulthood — affecting confidence, education, and emotional well-being. We cannot build a safe and inclusive Fort Osage community without protecting every student equally.

This isn't about punishment alone — it's about healing, prevention, and change. But that change can't happen without accountability.

What We're Asking

We, the undersigned, demand that the Fort Osage School District Superintendent and Board of Education:
• Immediately review and strengthen district policies regarding bullying and racial harassment.
• Enforce consistent disciplinary actions for racial slurs and hate-based bullying.
• Implement an Inclusion & Equity Committee before the next school term.
• Commit to annual training and transparent reporting.
