Revise the NC Social Studies Curriculum

    To the North Carolina General Assembly:
    I am writing concerning the new Social Studies/ History curriculum put forth by the North Carolina State Board of Educators. This curriculum is based on a philosophy that the United States is rooted in “white supremacy” and that “white supremacy” still informs our laws and institutions. In short, it is based on critical race theory.
    This theory asserts that every minority has been oppressed by whites and that such oppression is responsible for any disparity of outcome in society today. This is a dangerous and misleading theory that will have dire consequences for future generations. It will teach students that every failure, every unequal outcome is a result of the white power structures that hold them back. This vision undermines a moral bases for shared values as a large segment of the population will expect that the system is stacked against them. Rather than learning that hard work and ethics often results in success, students will learn to believe that they are not getting their entitled fair share based on their identity group and that this “fair share” is being denied them by others who are deliberately keeping them down. This social vision will cause distrust in relationships between races and authoritative institutions such as policing, legal systems, teachers, laws and government; ultimately contributing to the demise of our society.
    As students learn about our history as a nation, we can admit our failures and understand how those failures have had serious consequences. However, adopting the ideologies founded in critical race theory will ignore the many factors that contribute to the success of differing minority groups in the United States. Moreover, teaching a collectively held guilt at a legal or philosophical principle is dangerous. Anyone who knows even a bit of history can look throughout the 20th century and see the devastation caused by this ideology.
    I am strongly opposed to the adoption of the new history/ social studies North Carolina curriculum and ask that you reverse this destructive curriculum change.
