In late February of 2021, students of Sir Sandford Fleming College and Trent University participated in a party which has resulted in the spread of a Covid 19 variant of concern in Peterborough ON. Some of those who participated were health care students.
Due to their negligent and selfish behaviour, Peterborough is now moving into a red zone. This will impact peoples jobs, businesses, health and their lives. Now we will all suffer due to the negligence of a few.
Peterborough has a high seniors population who now face incredible danger to their health and their lives. Those that live in congregate residences will no longer be able to see their loved ones and their activities will be further curtailed.
It is not acceptable for the rest of our population to suffer while these students go unpunished. Their behaviour must have direct, strong and immediate consequences. A clear message must be sent that this will not be tolerated in our community.
We ask that Peterborough Public Health Unit and Peterborough Community Police Service charge all participants in accordance with the law. We also ask that Sir Sandford Fleming College and Trent University expel those involved. This will ensure specific and general deterrence to the students involved and to others who may contemplate behaving in a similar manner.
