America's teachers are in crisis – they are overworked and underpaid, facing severe staffing shortages as well as an onslaught of attacks from the GOP. It's no wonder they're burning out and quitting in droves.
That's why Bernie Sanders just introduced a bill to increase teachers' salaries, guaranteeing them a livable and competitive wage! His bill would guarantee a minimum salary for public school educators of $60,000 per year.
Currently, the starting pay for teachers is less than $40,000 per year in nearly 40% of school districts across the US. Many teachers have to work multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet, not to mention the fact that they pay for many supplies out of their own pockets!
Teachers are the backbone of our society, and we need to treat them as such. It's time teachers are compensated for the invaluable work they do – educating our children!
