Ask Hawaii to stop killing and beheading skunks!

In Hilo Harbour, an innocent skunk accidentally made its way onto the island. Sadly, instead of rescuing the skunk, officials made the heart-wrenching decision to trap, kill, and even dissect this lost creature. A week later, in Honolulu, another skunk was trapped and beheaded. https://spectrumlocalnews.com/hi/hawaii/news/2025/11/17/skunk-honolulu-harborThis cruel action is unacceptable, and there are more humane ways to handle such situations.  https://governor.hawaii.gov/newsroom/dab-news-release-on-skunk-captured-at-hilo-harbor/

The incident serves as a painful reminder of the inhumane practices that still exist when dealing with non-native animals that accidentally end up in Hawaii. It's distressing to see that even in our modern world, where humane solutions are readily available, killing an animal seems to be the first and only response. The poor skunk was a victim of circumstances, lost and far from its natural habitat.

There are scientifically-proven, humane, and no-kill tests for rabies that should be utilized instead of resorting to such brutality. Quarantine measures, along with the possibility of transferring such animals to wildlife sanctuaries, offer compassionate alternatives that respect life and address the underlying concerns of disease control without cruelty.

We urge the State of Hawaii to adopt these humane practices when dealing with non-native animals who accidentally find their way to its shores. Establishing a protocol that prioritizes animal welfare and respects life would position Hawaii as a leader in ethical wildlife management.

Let's put an end to this unnecessary cruelty and show the world that Hawaii stands for compassion and respect for all living creatures. Please sign this petition to advocate for change and to ensure no more animals suffer a similar fate. Together, we can make a significant difference.
