Urge the Trump Administration to restore teen pregnancy prevention funding

Teen pregnancy rates have plunged over the last 10 years as more adolescents are making smarter choices when it comes to their sexual health. These positive developments came in large part from federal funding for Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) programs, evidence-based approaches to comprehensive sex education for youth.

Unfortunately, President Trump appointed leadership at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that chose to ignore the incredible gains on teen pregnancy rates. In July 2017, in an unprecedented move, HHS sent notification that abruptly ended the TPP contracts two years early, and 81 organizations, some of which work in parts of the country where the teen pregnancy rate is three times the national average, will see their grants disappear in July 2018. Without TPP, 580,000 young people will lose access to comprehensive sex education. And make no mistake—teen pregnancy rates will rise.

Comprehensive sex education programs provided by TPP help teens avoid unplanned pregnancies, teach youth about consent and STDs/STIs, and equip them with the tools to live safe, healthy lives. These cuts to TPP will reverse the gains we have made in educating teens to make healthy decisions about their future.

TPP helps young people remain healthy and avoid negative sexual health outcomes, which allows them to better realize their full potential. Please stand with us and let HHS know that comprehensive sex education is essential for teens. Ask HHS to restore teen pregnancy prevention funding.

Dear Acting Secretary Hargan,

Teen Pregnancy Prevention programs have been critical to decreasing the rates of teen pregnancy over the last 10 years, and cuts to these programs will only reverse the progress our nation has made. I am asking you to fully restore funding for the 81 organizations across the country that operate teen pregnancy prevention programs.

TPP programs help teens avoid unplanned pregnancies, teach youth about consent and STDs/STIs, and equip them with the tools to live safe, healthy lives as adults. Without TPP, 580,000 young people will lose access to comprehensive sex education that help them make smarter choices about their health.

I believe we should continue to invest in health programs that continue to provide teens with comprehensive sex education. I urge you to reinstate funding for teenage pregnancy prevention programs that equip youth with the tools to live safe, healthy lives.

Sincerely,
