Save Lives by Supporting Access to Early Stage Cancer Detection

When women and non-binary folks are diagnosed with late stage ovarian or endometrial cancers, they face a discouraging survival rate of 10 to 30 percent. Even worse, 75 percent of ovarian cancers are diagnosed in late stages, when the cancer has already spread.

But hope is on the horizon. The McGill University Health Centre's (MUHC) Detecting Ovarian and Endometrial Cancer Early (DOvEE) Project is a research-based clinic working to fast-track eligible patients for specialized examinations that can lead to early detection of ovarian and endometrial cancers.

Led by Dr. Lucy Gilbert, the DOvEE Project is working to save lives through education, awareness, and a safe, minimally invasive detection test that could stop ovarian and endometrial cancers in their tracks, with the potential to increase survival rates.

In fact, when endometrial and ovarian cancers are detected early, the survival rate climbs to 93 percent — that's the difference between a death sentence and a fighting chance to beat cancer.

There are currently no reliable screening tests to diagnose these cancers at their earliest possible stage. The DOvEE project is the only one of its kind in the world. There is an urgent need to further refine Dr. Gilbert's screening test and increase its accessibility to cancer patients all over the world.
