Hello 👋,
Puppies born in cruel conditions in filthy cages on dog meat farms. Dogs forced to eat rubbish, human waste and animal carcasses, including other dead dogs (some of whom they may have actually known!) in order to survive. Starving dogs with agonising wounds and sore skin. Dogs brutally slaughtered by being hung up, burned, electrocuted, being beaten and having their heads smashed in. Tragically and disturbingly, this is the reality of one of South Korea's darkest practices: the dog meat trade.
Traditionally, dogs are eaten during the summer's Boknal Days, believed to be the hottest days of the year, and dog meat is said to have a cooling effect, although there is no scientific evidence to back this up.
Please note that I have nothing against Asian culture, and I love Asian people. It may be cultural and traditional, but nothing can justify such unnecessary violence, not even culture and tradition. FGM is cultural and traditional. Women being viewed as less equal than men and having their rights compromised is cultural and traditional. Honour killings are cultural and traditional. Rape even can be cultural. Does culture or tradition justify any of those practices? No, of course not. So why is this different just because the victims are canines and not humans? Animals have feelings and the capacity of thought and love like people do. They may not have those capacities to the same level as we do, but they have it.
Dog meat is disturbing, morally and ethically abhorrent, torturous, unnecessary and looks very bad on South Korea's reputation.
You may think I'm some Westerner who eats pork and other meats, but I'm a vegetarian/vegan. Although it is hypocritical to be opposed to the consumption of dog and meat whilst still eating other meats, regardless of whether we eat meat, opposition to dog and cat meat is a good thing, as the more opposition there is the quicker this trade will end. Anything that compassionately and ethically alleviates the suffering of sentient beings and stops unnecessary violence is a good thing by me...
It isn't just me who is against it. 946,752 people signed a previous Care2 petition to end a South Korean Dog Meat Festival. According to a survey in 2018, 80% of Koreans had not eaten dog meat in the previous year. Many South Koreans are still against banning dog meat, but attitudes are hopefully changing.
Please kindly and effectively speak up against the dog and cat meat trades to the South Korean Government!!! We ALL pledge to boycott your companies, share this petition with as many others as possible and encourage as many people as possible to boycott your companies until you speak up against the dog and cat meat trades!!! We also may support and encourage the buying of your (ethical) products as a reward when you speak up against dog and cat meat!!!
Thank you 😊 to the moon and back.
Best Wishes to all,
Rory.
Have the best day and night ever!
