Billionaires Pay Less in Taxes Than Nurses, Teachers, and Firefighters. It’s Time to Tax the Rich.

Something is deeply wrong in the United States.

Billionaires are getting richer every single day while working families are falling behind. People are working longer hours, skipping doctors visits, and struggling to afford rent, food, and childcare.

And yet, many billionaires pay lower tax rates than teachers, nurses, and truck drivers.

This is not an accident. It's a system built to protect extreme wealth.

In the United States today, just a tiny group of billionaires -- 938 of them, to be exact -- holds more wealth than most of the country combined. Fewer than a thousand people are living on trillions of dollars while millions of people live paycheck to paycheck, unsure where their next meal might come from or how they'll pay rent this month.

How did wealth in the U.S. become this unbalanced?

Over the last 50 years, trillions of dollars produced by the working class have been absorbed by the richest 1%. Workers are more productive than ever, but they are not seeing the rewards. The system has been rigged to benefit the ultra-rich and the ultra-rich alone.

The Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act, introduced by Bernie Sanders and Ro Khanna, would seek to restore justice and fairness by placing a 5% tax on the wealth of billionaires. This would raise trillions of dollars that could transform lives.

In the first year, Sanders and Khanna propose a direct payment to lower income folks -- $3,000 for every person in a household.

After that, money would start going to improving systems so that they work for the people -- from expanding Medicaid to provide dental, vision, and hearing, to providing universal childcare, to making sure no teacher makes less than $60,000 a year, and so much more.

Affordable housing expansion and a potential end to homelessness. Better healthcare for seniors and people with disabilities. This is the potential bright future for the United States if this tax went into affect -- raising over 4 trillion dollars in the first 10 years for things that really matter.

And here's the truth: billionaires would barely feel it.

Even after paying their fair share in taxes, they would still have more wealth than anyone could ever spend in a lifetime. For example, under this plan, Elon Musk would have paid 42 billion more in taxes last year -- leaving him with 792 billion left in his net worth. And for working families, that money could mean survival. It could mean dignity. It could mean hope.

So why isn't this already law?

Because billionaires have enormous power. They spend hundreds of millions of dollars to influence elections, shape laws, and protect their own wealth -- while everyone else pays the price.

This is not just about money. It's about democracy.

We cannot have a country where a handful of billionaires control our economy, our politics, and our future. As Sanders puts it, that is not a democracy. That is an oligarchy.

We have to choose: a nation that works for everyone… or one that works only for the ultra-rich.
