Five Years of Human Rights Atrocities. Demand Australia Stop Sending Refugees to Cruel Offshore Detention Centres!

  • by: Care2 Team

This July marks the fifth anniversary of Australia's cruel policy that relegates refugees to detention centers on Manus and Nauru islands. For five years, these detention centers have been home to numerous human rights atrocities. Asylum seekers detained there have gone so far as to light themselves on fire to protest the conditions they face. From insufficient health care to sexual assault, refugees on Manus and Nauru are suffering in exile.

A former Manus detainee told Human Rights Watch, "The current situation on Manus Island is just like hell."

All of this started five years ago when then-Prime Minister Rudd enacted a policy requiring all refugees traveling to Australia by boat be sent to remote offshore camps. The detention centers on Nauru and Manus have cost the country nearly $4 billion.

This brutal policy must be reversed and the 1,600 refugees who are still detained must be freed.

Please do your part to help by signing the petition today. If enough of us sign this petition, then we can show the current Australian government that even after five years, the world is still watching and expecting better.

Sign and demand Prime Minister Turnbull reverse the policy that sends asylum seekers to their peril on offshore detention centers, and free those suffering on Manus and Nauru now.
