Stop Speed Trap Ticketing in Texas

  • by: Darrell Rodriguez
  • recipient: The Governor of Texas and the Texas State Legislature
Many small towns in Texas have resorted to a devious tactic of drastically lowering the speed limit in their towns in order to catch unsuspecting motorist and ticket them. These speed traps are an unfair transportation tax and are a dishonest way to generate revenue for small towns. Help raise awareness of this issue by telling the Governor of Texas and the state legislature to put an end to speed trap ticketing!

We the undersigned are tired of being pulled over and ticketed in small town speed traps as we travel across the State of Texas. We know these abrupt changes in speed are only a cover. These small towns will have us believe that they abruptly lower the speed limit in order to promote safety, but we are painfully aware that this is not so. Small towns use these speed traps to generate revenue because they are unable to attract businesses, unable to generate commerce and unable to meet their budgets. As a result of their failure to attract willing commerce and generate revenue, they have resorted to creating speed traps and unjustly ticket unsuspecting motorists.

These small towns have the law on their side, and Texans are reduced to paying hefty fines so that these towns can deviously fill their coffers. We are being robbed! This unfair ticketing is outrageous, dishonest and simply not very Texan! It depletes our bank accounts, raises our car insurance rates and leaves us loathing our respected peace officers, who are only following orders from their town leadership.

Speed trap ticketing is essentially an unfair transportation tax that Texans are forced to pay every day. We need a law that protects Texans from this unfair and corrupt taxation.

We therefore petition the Governor and the Texas State Legislature for the passage of a law that makes speed traps illegal. We also demand a requirement for more blatantly obvious signs that warn motorists of abrupt decreases in the speed limit so that we can safely travel the state at the appropriate speed. Stop these small towns from using unsuspecting motorists to generate revenue.

The time for action is long overdue, and we need your leadership in this matter.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
