Danny Nichols DESERVES death penalty

A Columbia man was denied bond today after he was charged in the beating and shaking of a 2-year-old girl left in his care.

The 2-year-old is in critical condition at Palmetto Health Richland with internal and external injuries, Richland County Sheriff's spokesman Chris Cowan said.

Danny Nichols, 22, was charged with inflicting great bodily injury unpon a child in the incident, Cowan said.

Nichols, who is the live-in boyfriend of the child's mom, was babysitting while the mom was at work, Cowan said.

It's unclear how long the child was in Nichols' care before she was taken by a relative to the Hopkins Fire Department about 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Cowan would not release any details about the relative nor the cicrumstances around the relative finding the child and taking her to the hospital.

The child had extensive injuries all over her body and had to be transported by Richland County EMS to the hospital, Cowan said.

He would not release any details of her injuries, nor say if she was beating with any object.

"She was beaten and shaken violently. It's unknown what's going to happen," Cowan said. "Her injuries are very, very extensive all over her body."

No one else is expected to be charged in the case, he said.
