Extending KU's nondiscrimination policy to include gender identity and expression

The University of Kansas is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Federal and state legislation prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, age, disability and veteran status. In addition, University policies prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, marital status and parental status.


Because transgender people and those who choose to present their gender in ways incongruent to their biological sex are often targets of harassment and discrimination, we, the undersigned, are in support of The University of Kansas expanding its nondiscrimination policy to include gender identity and gender expression.


The KU nondiscrimination policy encourages, %u201CEvery member of the university community%u2026to engage in action that leads towards the development of a more democratic and inclusive community.%u201D This petition is the first step towards building a more inclusive KU community so that all students, regardless of their gender presentation, are able to learn, grow, and succeed.


We, the undersigned, therefore call on The University of Kansasto reaffirm its commitment to diversity and fairness for all by adding gender identity and expression to its nondiscrimination policy.
