Green roofs have many social, economic and enviornmental advantages. We should encourage Congress to pass green legislation and public work projects to promote green roofs.
If we increase the number of green roofs our environment will improve on a local and global scale. Green roofs are roofs that have vegetation on them. This treatment has many benefits. First of all green roofs are shown to reduce the temperature on the roof by 70 % - 90%. This means that in will reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect and it will also increase the lifetime of the roof. These roofs also reduce storm water runoff by an average of 90%. This reduces of eliminates the need for storm drains and can reduce pollution due to runoff. In addition to the clear environmental benefits green roofs also have many psychological advantages. They improve mood, productivity and creativity and decrease crimes and drug use. They also have the ability to start a new industry and help our economy. All of these benifits should convince Congress to pass green roof legislation.
