Safety Ratings for ALL Cosmetics

  • Please sign this petition, if in your heart of hearts you are convinced, as I am, that the cosmetic industry is due for a regulatory body and a system that monitors the safety of the products sold to every Canadian.  There is no need to be Canadian to sign this petition, only a desire and belief that a change is needed!

According to Health Canada "estimated sales of cosmetics in Canada total over four billion dollars annually".  All Canadians use cosmetics and personal care products on a daily basis.  Some of these products include things like shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, body lotions, as well as make-up, hair colour as well as other cosmetic conveniences.

Many commonly used personal care products contain potentially dangerous chemicals of which the average Canadian is completely unaware.  Making sense of complicated lists of chemical ingredients is impossible for the average consumer.  Still, choices are being made blindly everyday by millions of Canadians. Each consumer has a basic human right to making the correct and informed choices about the cosmetics and personal care products he or she uses.

Therefore, this petition proposes that:

  1. All cosmetic and personal care products are to carry a safety rating clearly printed at the front of the package with a safety rating value from 0 to 10, starting from least dangerous to most dangerous.
  2. The most dangerous ingredients (rated 7 or higher) are to be clearly highlighted within the ingredient list.
  3. All personal product ratings are to be rated by an independent, non-profit body, based on the model of the Environmental Working Group's www.cosmeticdatabase.com. Alternatively, a subgroup division of Health Canada is to be established for the purpose of creating stringent and honest safety ratings for the cosmetic and personal care products.

We the undersigned, wish to call to the attention of the Minster of Health to a growing need for safety regulation within the cosmetic industry.

Canadians purchase cosmetic and personal care products on a daily basis without making an informed decision about the products they are purchasing.  Although the ingredients list is often included at the back of the product, more information is needed so that each individual can make the correct choice for him or her, as well as their family.

Thank you for taking the time to view this proposal for regulatory change within the cosmetic industry.  It is the belief of the undersigned that informed purchases of cosmetic and personal care products is the basic right of each and every Canadian citizen.
