No Punitive U.S. duty on Roquefort Cheese

We call upon President Obama to revoke the punitive American duty rise of 300% against roquefort cheese enacted by his predecessor, George W. Bush, as he left office. The action by the Bush Administration was taken as part of a larger trade dispute between the USA and the European Union--who have resisted American beef imports because of the use of hormones in raising American cattle--but this policy appears spitefully aimed against the French who refused to support Bush's disastrous war on Iraq. This exceptionally high duty on the famous French cheese simply restricts its availability to RICH Americans while hurting the livelihood of French farmers and cheesemakers unconnected to the larger EU trade dispute. The action is a barrier to good relations between the USA & France at a time when international cooperation is essential. As a goodwill gesture before he visits Strasbourg this spring, we respectfully request that President Obama to correct this wrong-headed policy.
Nous demandons au pr�sident Obama de r�voquer la surtaxe punitive de 300% contre le Roquefort d�cret�e par son pr�d�cesseur, George W. Bush, au moment de quitter son poste. Cette action de l'administration Bush a �t� implement�e comme part d'une plus grande dispute commerciale entre les USA et la CE (qui r�siste � l'importation de boeuf am�ricain � cause de l'usage des hormones dans l'�levage du b�tail aux USA) mais cette mesure semble �tre plut�t une r�tribution contre les fran�ais qui ont refus� de soutenir la guerre d�sastreuse de M.Bush contre l'Iraq. Cette surtaxe exceptionelle sur ce c�l�bre fromage fran�ais ne ferait que restreindre son acc�s aux am�ricains RICHES, tout en faisant du tort � des fermiers et des fromagers francais qui n'ont aucune connection � la dispute de fond. Cette action est une barri�re aux bonnes relations entre les USA et la France, � un moment o� la coop�ration internationale est essentielle. En geste de bonne volont� avant qu'il visite Strasbourg ce printemps, nous demandons respectueusement au president Obama de corriger cette mesure mal pens�e.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request President Obama revoke the punitive 300% rise in duty against roquefort cheese--instituted by the Bush Administration in its last days. We believe the repeal of this staggering tariff will promote goodwill between the United States and France at a time when international cooperation is more vital than ever.
