The debate in Canada over legalizing marijuana has been discussed regularly over the past few decades. The Canadian judicial system is completely strapped for cash. With the courts are backlogged and police forces barely functioning, it is time for the Canadian government to put its priorities in order.
There are many benefits to legalizing marijuana. It will lower the cost to the justice system, because courts and police forces will no longer have to pursue minor charges against non-violent offenders.
Legalizing it would also give authorities more control, allowing them would be able to regulate it just like tobacco or alcohol. It would also increase safety for users, essentially negating the chances of exposure to other, more harmful drugs.
With over 50% of Canadians wanting to legalize this drug, it is time to do so. The benefits clearly outweigh the negatives. Tell the Canadian government that it is now time to legalize marijuana.
We the undersigned sincerely ask the Canadian government to legalize marijuana. Research and studies have shown that not only is criminalizing the use of marijuana not working, but that it unnecessarily ruins lives. Sending users to jail for such a minor offence sets them up to be career criminals and places more strain on the justice system than needed. As costs are soaring in the courts as well as the police forces due to backlog and pursuing criminals with minor marijuana charges, the government needs to come up with a plan and a solution to this lack of revenue. Legalizing marijuana is that solution as it will severely reduce costs to the legal system and will create a new and large source of revenue for the country. Legalizing marijuana will also allow the drug to be controlled and regulated as people will no longer have to buy it from unreliable sources which put them at risk for exposure to other, more harmful drugs.
The benefits clearly outweigh the negatives. Please seriously consider legalizing marijuana as it will benefit and support all Canadians.
