Age Limits in Public Office Are Popular, Necessary, And Overdue. Congress Must Act.

Americans agree on very little these days, but age is one of the rare exceptions. Nearly 80% of Americans support a maximum age limit for elected officials in Washington, and nearly three-quarters support age limits for Supreme Court justices, according to new national polling. That level of agreement across parties is extraordinary. So why is Congress ignoring it?

Currently, the United States is governed by some of the oldest political leaders in its history. We have seen presidents fall asleep in meetings, candidates forced to withdraw due to age-related concerns, and lifetime appointments that allow justices to remain in power well into their late 70s and beyond. This wouldn't be a problem if there were any measures in place to ensure continued fitness for the role – but there aren't any. One pharmacist even went on record to say he filled Alzheimer's prescriptions for members or congress.

A growing number of leaders from across the political spectrum are now calling for a mandatory retirement age for presidents, members of Congress, cabinet officials, and federal judges. Polling shows strong support from Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike.

This is not about disrespect. It is about responsibility. In almost every other sector of American life, there are clear limits tied to age, health, and performance: from the military to corporate leadership. Yet in Washington, lawmakers and judges are allowed to hold immense power indefinitely, even as cognitive decline becomes an open concern.

Public confidence in government is collapsing. Ethics scandals are mounting. Trust is eroding. And Americans are increasingly asking the same question: why is there no accountability at the very top?

This is about fairness. It's about competence. And it's about restoring trust in democratic institutions.

Sign the petition to join us in calling on Congress to introduce and pass legislation establishing reasonable, uniform age limits for federal elected officials and Supreme Court justices, ensuring that public service remains service, not a lifetime entitlement.
